Greenland Ice Sheet
Thin Slice
Depth: 1,058m
Age: 5,471 Years Before Present

Using a device that resembles a sophisticated cheese slicer, researchers cut sub-millimeter thin slices out of polar ice cores to isolate bubbles trapped in the ice. Each thin slice reveals a unique set of textures determined by the ice structure. By mapping the dispersion of air bubbles in the cut of ice, researchers are able to estimate global temperatures during that age of the Earth.

Here we are looking down on one of these roughly 3” wide by 4” long slices, lit from below. At around 5,500 years old, this ice slice consists of snow that fell around the start of human civilization.
