A Brief Note From Dirk Hobman About the Photographs

Thank you for your interest and support of my work!

I use a variety of traditional black and white films and a medium format camera to capture the images you see. The negatives produced through the medium format camera are approximately three times the size of those captured by 35mm cameras and thus provide uncompromised detail and clarity. I process all negatives by hand to ensure the highest quality results possible.

While I learned to print using traditional methods, digital imaging tools have so exceeded those available in the darkroom that I now print exclusively through digital means. I am interested in producing only the finest, most authentic, prints possible, and digital methods now allow for the highest realization of my goals with archival quality that matches or exceeds that available in a traditional darkroom print. I use only the finest materials to ensure the utmost longevity of the prints I produce so as to satisfy even the most demanding collector.

Once the negatives have been developed, I scan individual frames for print preparation. The post-scanning process involves a set of steps customized to each image. These steps allow for the preparation of each file for printing while maintaining the full integrity of the image as photographed and captured in the negative. Unless explicitely stated to the contrary, no images have been digitally altered so as to remove or add content.

Final prints are made on a professional printer with archival media using a customized black and white inkset that I personally developed. This system represents one of the finest black and white digital printing system available today. If you have any questions or would like to know more details about the work I do, please do not hesitate to contact me.
